The Patriot Report – February 8th, 2019

Our Grade Two students are going to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday of next week. I can recall receiving the sacrament myself for the first time as well at St. Patrick’s in Maple Ridge. I remember the nervousness and hoping that I would remember all the steps. I still get nervous now and I still bring a copy of the Act of Contrition with me. In fact, when I read it, I tend to take my time and really contemplate the meaning of my words as opposed to memorizing it and hoping I don’t make a mistake. The act of confession can sometimes be uncomfortable because we have to look inward and contend with the idea that we are flawed individuals. But this introspection is vitally important and it is worth reminding ourselves that we all need to work on continual self-improvement. Let us all say a collective prayer for our Gr. 2 students and ask that God continue to bless them and watch over them. Let us also prayer for ourselves that we continue to grow in faith. Lastly, let us pray for our pastors who need to guide the faithful in the ways of Christ.

Thank you to all those who attended our AGM and Re-registration night. In particular I would like to thank the members of the PEC who helped process the re-registration forms and to the many parents who showed patience as we worked through the packages. We will review our procedures and we will always look for ways to improve. Thank you.

This coming Monday, Feb 11, intermediate choir will be held at lunch time from 12:15-12:45pm.
We will be practicing in the music room. There will be no choir afterschool. Please ensure your child is picked up by 3:00pm on Monday, or see to it that other arrangements are made.

St. Jude School is hosting it’s annual Open House starting at 1:00 pm on February 13, 2019. We encourage families to promote this Open House to all potential new families.

Thank you to all the families that support our Scholastic Book Fair. We managed to surpass our goals and that means more books for our classroom and school libraries! All proceeds will be invested into reading. Thank you!

As an administrator it is my desire to always have school be in session. However, I cannot put students and staff at risk in the event that road conditions become treacherous. Our school is a commuter school in that the majority of our students are driven to the school and our staff comes from various neighbourhoods. This presents unique conditions for our school that must be considered when discerning whether to close the school due to weather.
The school will communicate a closure due to weather through the school website and through email using our MailChimp service as well as Remind. Please understand that the decision to close is never an easy decision and numerous factors are taken into consideration.

Parents are responsible for checking email and the website on cold weather days when snow is in the forecast. 

On February 1st, at Our Lady of Sorrows Juvenile Boys Basketball Tournament, St. Jude School was well represented by our grade five boys team. At half-time, they outperformed all other teams during the shooting competition. The boys demonstrated superior teamwork, enabling them to get off a higher number of good quality shots, outscoring the nearest opponent by a score of 11 to 6. During the round robin, the team won both games by large margins. In the final game, facing a taller, bigger team, they were significantly outscored early on. They made good adjustments, battled hard, and tied the game in regulation, forcing overtime, where they narrowly lost in the final minute by two points. The players demonstrated a full measure of grit and determination, as well as outstanding ball handling skills. Winson was voted team MVP.

Congratulations boys!!

On February 6th, students were gathered for an assembly with former St. Jude School student and current Grey Cup Champion with the Calgary Stampeders, Ante Milanovic-Litre.

Ante spoke to the students about the importance of hard work and having a prayer life to see you through difficult moments. The staff and students got to interact with Ante and the Grey Cup (a 110 yr old trophy in Canada reserved for the champions of the CFL). It was a great reminder to students that success is a by product of hard work and determination.
