REFLECTION

“I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy- I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it.” – Art Williams

I love the above quote because I think it applies to life in so many ways. It is an important message to share with your child. I am sure that at this point in the school year, most if not all students, are looking forward to summer. School is hard and tiring. And going to school becomes all the more challenging the closer we get to summer.

The quote though reminds us of the old Greek proverb that anything worth doing is going to be challenging. The challenge we face as parents is to help our children through the challenges of life. It is not to do it for them, but rather to provide just enough help, encouragement, and direction so that our children learn that they can overcome difficult times and challenging tasks. In understanding that school is worth the time, energy, and effort, we help our children to develop the internal strength and resilience to forge ahead.

So in these final days of the school year, I encourage you to remind your child that yes school is hard, and yes they may just want to stay home, but in life we need to embrace the challenge. When we learn to embrace the challenge we discover that we can persevere and overcome. And that is a worthy skill to have.
