REFLECTION

“Reconciliation requires us to confront our own biases and prejudices.” – Murray Sinclair

We must all take time this weekend to pause and reflect on our own biases, prejudices, and the false judgments we may have about others. The reason this is an important part of the process of reconciliation is because it requires us to see more truthfully.

The road to reconciliation in Canada with our Indigenous brothers and sisters is a long road but we must all do our part. We need learn about the history of this land. We need to learn about the trauma of the Indian Residential School system. We need to work towards making real the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We need to make sure that we raise a generation of children that understands that Every Child Matters.

I encourage all of our families to seek out events promoting Truth and Reconciliation this weekend. Here are some possible events:

Join the Semiahmoo First Nation’s 3rd Annual Walk for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30, beginning near Grand Chief Bernard Robert Charles Plaza and ending at Semiahmoo Park. It runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Indigenous artist James Harry discusses his newest project with SOS Children’s Village B.C. at 1174 Welch St. on Sept. 30. from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Nisga’a Ts’amiks Vancouver Society will honour the lost children and survivors from the residential school system with a National Day For Truth And Reconciliation event at John Hendry Park at Trout Lake Community Centre on Sept. 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in the program. Orange shirts will be sold and there will be food vendors.

DROP OFF LANE ETIQUETTE

The morning drop off lane exists to create a smooth flow of traffic for parents who are looking for a quick drop off and go. There are rules that need to be followed in order for the drop off lane to be effective.

  1. Pull as far forward as possible before stopping as this allows for other cars to pull in behind.
  2. Drivers are not to get out of the car – if your child cannot independently get out of the car on their own then the drop off lane is not for you.
  3. Absolutely no parking is permitted.
  4. Be mindful of other cars coming into the parking lot – use your signal
  5. Exit to either Renfrew driveway or East 15 driveway
  6. Be respectful of our Parent Supervisors who are there to enforce the rules and act on behalf of the school.

Thank you for your cooperation.
