REFLECTION
“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” —Seneca
Easter is a time to rejoice because through Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection, we are offered new life. That is the Paschal Mystery – death gives way to new life. The Paschal Mystery can be witnessed each year in many ways and it becomes most apparent during the season of spring.
Each spring the cherry blossoms come into full bloom. Their beauty connects with many people as evidenced by the number of pictures people take with the cherry blossoms. The cherry blossom will die off and give way to the leaves of the tree which, in time, will fall off. The cycle of life to death to new life is repeated.
Another example of the Paschal Mystery can be found in the idea of self renewal. Throughout the gospels, Christ speaks in symbolic imagery to help His followers understand the powerful mystery of death to new life. He references a grain of wheat that must die and break open in order to produce grain which gives life. He references a vineyard that must be pruned of the dead branches to give way for new life and better fruit. He connects all of this to the need for individuals to grow and renew. We must look inward, confront the parts of ourselves that are preventing growth, and cut them off to allow for new growth to emerge.
Cutting away the parts of ourselves that are preventing growth is never easy. This is where we can look to Christ. Christ demonstrates for his disciples that the path to new life is hard but worthy of our effort. With renewed energy and the beauty of life all around us, we celebrate the mystery of death to new life this Easter season.
