REFLECTION

“I also realize that winning doesn’t always mean getting first place; it means getting the best out of yourself.” —Meb Keflezighi, 2004 Olympic Marathon silver medalist

The past two weeks I had the honor of helping to run the CISVA Track and Field Championships. It is one of the largest track meets in Western Canada. We had 37 CISVA Elementary schools participate. Over the course of the two days, there were many highlights. To place in the top 8 in any event is something to be commended. We had several athletes do just that!

Vincent Collins – Long Jump – 5th Place with a jump of 3.48m

Alex Yan – Shot Put – 5th place with a throw of 9.08m

Gianna Dosanjh – Shot Put – 4th place with a throw of 7.19m

Jalen Fung – Long Jump – 4th place with a jump of 3.99m

Jalen Fung – 400m race – 2nd place with a time of 1:06:38

We had other athletes come close to cracking the top 8, with some of them just fractions off of the mark. But each of our track athletes gave it their best effort on the day of competition. There is much more potential though to be uncovered in our student athletes. Track and field is a wonderful sport because children can find different areas to thrive in. If your child does not like running then shot put or discuss may be their perfect event. If your child loves to run, then the short and medium distances may turn out to be their favourite.

I encourage parents to enroll your children in track programs and clubs outside of school. Learning how to excel in different track and field disciplines will not only give them a sense of pride and accomplishment, but it will also give them life long lessons that will positively shape their life. The role of the school is to mainly introduce students to different sports. The community clubs such as Drive or Burnaby Eagles or Journey for basketball, or community soccer or hockey, or track clubs, can take your child to another level. The same is true for music. We introduce students to a variety of musical instruments, but a passion for playing a particular instrument will often be developed outside of school with music instructors or programs.

Here are links to some of the track clubs in our area:

http://burnabystriders.ca/ – practices run out of Burnaby Central

https://www.thunderbirdstrack.org/ – practices run out of Swangard Stadium

Children as young as Grade 2 and 3 can start to do track and field with these clubs. Even if track and field is not your child’s first sport, you may find that it helps them to excel in other others.

END OF YEAR MUSIC CONCERT - COLOR THE WORLD WITH SONG

Thank you to Mrs. Collins, Miss Smillie, Dr. Luchkow, and all of our staff and accompanists who helped to make our mini concert yesterday a success. It was so good to be together again to watch our children sing and perform. The Orchestra has another concert coming up on June 20th at 7pm in our school gym.

Yesterday, the admission donations totaled $1072.00!

All of those funds are being put to the purchase of a class set of Ukuleles. Thank you for your generosity.

GR 5 GOES TO DR. SUN YAT SUN GARDEN AND DRAGON BOATING

Students in Gr. 5 had an amazing learning experience on June 6th. Students started their day at the Dr. Sun Yat Sun Chinese Garden where they learned about how the garden was constructed, what it symbolizes, and how the space was designed to highlight Chinese culture. The students then got to go Dragon Boating in False Creek. The weather was great and despite some kids being very wet, it was a fun learning opportunity for all!

GR 3 HEADS TO LYNN VALLEY TO LEARN ABOUT ECOLOGY

Gr. 3 students had a fun time learning about living species and environments while at Lynn Valley on June 6. It was a hands-on experience and students had fun interacting with the environment.

SPORTS DAY FUN AT ST. JUDE SCHOOL

Students at St. Jude School had a blast doing the different obstacle courses around the property. The cheers at the start of the event were awesome and it was great to see kids enjoy being kids!
