REFLECTION

“No single act of love for God will be lost, no generous effort is meaningless, no painful endurance wasted.” – Pope Francis

The above quote from Pope Francis is found near the end of his work, The Joy of the Gospel. He is reminding the reader that “we need an interior certainty, a conviction that God is able to act in every situation, even amid apparent setbacks.” I think it is an important message to hold onto regardless of our position in life. Children need to know that their generous and kind acts matter. Parents need to know that the sacrifices they make matter. We need to hold on to the idea that what we do matters even if we cannot fully see the results.

When I used to work at Golden Eagle Golf Course as an operator during my university days, I used to take great pleasure in trying to cut striping patterns that were near perfect. It gave me great satisfaction to see the immediate result of the work I had done. This is probably why I enjoy completing puzzles or building woodworking projects; I can see the immediate result of the work and it is satisfying. But most of the important work I do, does not work like that.

As teachers, we do not always get to see the impact of the work we do. We may not even realize how our words may have made a lasting impact (we always hope it is a positive impact). As parents, it is much the same. We work hard to create loving and supportive families. We try to give our children positive experiences. We may wonder if driving all over the lower mainland to get them to their activities is worth it. We may wonder if paying tuition for our children’s education is worth it. We may wonder if going to Mass on the weekend is worth it. Lots of wonderings.

But we need to listen to the words of Pope Francis and have faith that the good works we do will yield good results even if we cannot immediately see it.
