REFLECTION

“Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.” – Emily Brontë

The past two weeks has certainly had its fair share of gloomy weather. However, there have been days of reprieve and one of the more enjoyable parts of the school day is getting to see the children play freely during their outdoor play times at recess and lunch.

My career in education started in high school. In a high school, recess and lunch breaks are mostly opportunities for kids to walk around or sit in a cafeteria. Today, with the prevalence of iPhones and androids, I am sure that recess and lunch breaks are mostly spent on devices checking the latest social media posts. When I moved from high school to elementary school there were many cultural adjustments I had to make. One of the best culture changes was to be around so much joy, energy, and excitement.

Our children will literally sprint full on for the adventure playground. They challenge each other on the monkey bars. The play games that make sense to them but not to the adults supervising. Their imaginations come fully alive. It is something worth appreciating.
