REFLECTION

LEST WE FORGET

On November 11, we remember. We pause to reflect on those who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. This is no trivial holiday and we must all take time to learn about the sacrifices of our fallen soldiers.

In 2007, my wife and I travelled around Europe and we spent a couple of weeks in The Netherlands as this is where my part of Dad’s family was from. Outside the small town of Elst lies a bigger town of Arnhem. In this town there is a cemetery that is largely dedicated to the Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in fighting for the freedoms of the Allied countries. My wife and I visited this cemetery (Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery). I can still recall the powerful feelings of gratitude I had as I walked the paths and saw the hundreds of Canadian soldiers that had died there. Their gravestones marked their years of life and I was absolutely humbled by the fact that so many were my age. Here I was touring Europe with my wife and enjoying the sights and sounds of various European cities. Sights and sounds that they never experienced. Their tour of Europe was much different and without them and the many Allied forces, the horrors of the Nazi Regime would have spread far and wide. What also struck me about the cemetery was the pride that the Dutch people took with respect to caring for the site. It was immaculately kept. It spoke to how the Dutch people valued the sacrifices of our Canadian soldiers.

As we approach Remembrance Day, let us pause and offer our thanks. Let us wear the poppy with pride. Let us remind ourselves why they sacrificed and why we must honor their legacy.
