The Patriot Report – November 29, 2019

Reflection

There is an epic moment in the film Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King when Gandalf tasks Pippin with lighting the Beacons of Amon Din. Once lit, all the beacons across Middle Earth light up as a sign that Gondor needs help in this time of darkness. Once the beacon is lit, Gandalf says aloud to himself, “Hope is kindled.”

Similar to how Gandalf and the men of Middle Earth are battling the dark forces of a supernatural evil and one spark kindles hope, we too are battling the darkness of depression, despair, sorrow, suffering, our kindness and generosity can be the spark that lights the way for others.

Advent, which begins this Sunday, is a time that asks how we can live more fully in the light of the Lord so that we can be a light for others in dark times. The Catholic Church has always understood that light is a powerful symbol of how love can conquer death and despair. We are each called to be a light for others through our generous deeds and loving sacrifice. St. Paul, writing to the Ephesians, reminds us to “Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth” (Eph 5:8-9).

When we bring the light of the Lord to others through our generosity, mercy, and kindness, then hope is kindled.
