The Patriot Report – June 19

Reflection

Somethings never get old.

In times such as these, we often need reminders of why we, as a Christ-centered faith filled community, are a joyous and hopeful people. One of the more powerful reminders comes from the Jesuit tradition of performing an Examen ( a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence). In performing such a daily reflection, we might come to see and appreciate the common things as God’s way of communicating to us the beauty of His message.

With Father’s Day upon us (Happy Father’s Day Dads), I find myself reflecting on my role as a father and in doing that I think of my kids. Each day, if I take the time to reflect and there is great challenge in just doing that, I find that there are things my kids do each day that are blessings from God. I never tire of those blessings. When I get home from work, one or more of my kids will run up to me and shout “Daddy” with enthusiasm. That never gets old. I love it every time. At some point during the evening one of my kids will make me laugh. That never gets old. I love it every time. And at some other point I will catch myself looking at my child in bewilderment and awe. That feeling never gets old. Why does it not get old? Why don’t I grow tired of them making me laugh? I certainly grow tired of them bickering and fighting. I think it is because God is speaking his love for me and for all of humanity in those moments. How would any of us grow tired of God’s endless love?

So I encourage you to reflect on the things that bring joy into your life. Allow that joy to swell up inside of you and give thanks to God. There is much to be grateful for each and everyday. Being grateful never gets old.
