The Patrioteer – May 2, 2025

PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Happy May! Yesterday,  May 1st, we celebrated a special feast day in the Catholic Church–the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This feast day recognizes St. Joseph, a humble carpenter, and also upholds the dignity of the worker. In an age where many in the world are marginalized and exploited by their employers, we teach our children that work has value and the worker is also of great value.

At school we honour St. Joseph the Worker by teaching children to take pride in the work they do and work to the best of their ability. Doing your work with pride can be a form of praising God. In school children can show their care in many ways, keeping their desks and cubbies clean, keeping their papers and workbooks neat and organized, and keeping the school grounds clean and orderly. By accepting the work given to us by God happily and finishing it well, we show our inestimable value as being made in the image and likeness of a Creator who worked for six days and rested on the seventh.

St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us!

St. Jude, pray for us!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ORCHESTRA!

This week our intermediate students were able to visit the Orpheum concert hall to listen to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The students were treated to a fun cinema-themed concert titled, “Lights, Camera, Orchestra!”

Thank you to Miss O’Gorman and the Intermediate teachers for facilitating this exciting excursion.

TRACK MEET FUN!

This week our students had the pleasure of attending two track meets at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. Monday was the Friar’s Track Meet and Thursday was the St. Joseph Track Meet. Everyone performed their best and showed their track and field skills! Our students also embodied team spirit and Patriot Pride as they cheered each other on with gusto!

Thank you to Mr. Mow, Mr. C, Mrs. Abela, Ms. Glinsbockel, Mrs. DiFonzo, Mrs. Stanley, and Miss M for coaching and providing these opportunities for our students!

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

This coming weekend is the celebration of our Grade Two’s First Holy Communion. The students, led by Mrs. Urquhart, have been learning and growing in the Spirit all year as they prepare for this special and important sacrament. This week they were able to take time for a retreat as the final part of their sacramental preparation. They learned about how communion hosts were made and even got to make their own unleavened bread.

Congratulations on your sacramental preparation, Grade Two!

NEW AFTER SCHOOL CLUB EMPLOYEE

We are sad to announce that Ms. Bronagh Ganley has had to resign from our school to return to her home country of Ireland.

Our new After School Club Supervisor, Ms. Lucia Torres, began work on Thursday and will continue through the rest of the school year. Ms. Torres comes to us with many years of experience working in schools with children. She is very happy to be a part of the St. Jude Community and is a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Vancouver.

Welcome, Ms. Torres!
